Stephanie Cain Van dÕElden, University of Minnesota
Stephanie Van dÕElden grew up in southern Minnesota. After attending Middlebury College for two years, she received her undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota in 1961. She went to San Jose State College where she studied German literature. There she obtained her first MasterÕs degree in German (1965). Three years later, she received a MasterÕs degree in Political Science at the University of South Carolina (1968). Stephanie Van dÕElden eventually moved back to Minnesota, and in 1974 she received her Ph.D. in German Philology.
Over the years, Stephanie Van dÕElden has taught at widely varying institutions. She taught at the American High School in Heidelberg, Germany (1961 Ð 62) and was a teaching or research assistant and teaching associate from 1968 Ð 1974 during her doctorate studies at the University of Minnesota. After receiving her degree, Stephanie Van dÕElden taught at both Hamline University and the College of St. Thomas in the Twin Cities (1975 Ð 79). She has been a lecturer in the Honors Program since 1986.
Stephanie Van dÕElden is a currently a member of the Medieval Academy of America, the International Arthurian Society, the International Courtly Literature Society. Her main research interests are medieval courtly literature, especially heraldic poetry and medieval German literature. She currently holds a post-doctorate position in the Center for Medieval Studies.
