Center for Medieval Studies at the University of MinnesotaCenter for Medieval Studies Affiliated Group: Friends of the Center for Medieval StudiesFor over ten years the Center for Medieval Studies has had great support from people across the Twin Cities, greater Minnesota and further afield. The Center has enjoyed the company of fellow-enthusiasts for the Middle Ages at our conferences and at our Thursday afternoon colloquia. In 1997 a group of Minnesota medievalists formed the Friends of the Center for Medieval Studies to ensure that the news about the Center and its activities got out across the state and beyond. The annual contributions of the Friends helps to support the many events put on by the Center throughout the year including not only our conferences and colloquia but our efforts at outreach in the area. For the 2006 - 2007 academic year, we are offering three categories of Friends membership with the following levels of contribution:
All Friends will receive first-class mailing of the Center for Medieval Studies schedule of events. In addition, Sustaining Members will receive 2 hours of validated University parking for each afternoon colloquium. To become a Friend of the Center for Medieval Studies and insure the continued success of the Center, please send your annual subscription to:

Center for Medieval Studies Affiliated Group: Conlegium Gaviarum, AKA The LoonsThe Loons are a student group for anyone interested in Medieval Studies. In the past, the group has organized trips to the Hill Monastic Manuscript Library at St. John's, formed a Latin Reading Group, trips to Stillwater's famous used bookstores, and went to see "The Description of the World" at the Theatre de la Jeune Lune in Minneapolis during 01/02. If you have ideas for activities, please let us know. The MRG, founded over twenty years ago, continues its successful program of meetings at the homes of members on Friday evenings, featuring a pot-luck supper followed by a presentation or discussion. The group's purpose is to provide an informal environment for an exchange of ideas on a wide range of medieval topics and for the presentation of conference papers or works in progress in a friendly atmosphere. It facilitates informal interaction among University of Minnesota medievalists from all the departments associated with the Center and those at neighboring institutions. Spring Semester 2007 February 9: "Sun, Fun, and Manuscripts - The Minnesota
Manuscript Lab at HMML: Canoes Optional" March 30: Erik Carlson from the University of Minnesota Department of English will present "Burning Questions: Arson and the Law in Icelandic Saga." All meetings are on Friday evenings at 7 p.m, unless otherwise noted. We will e-mail you and put flyers in your campus mail boxes with directions to the locations as we get closer to the dates. If you have questions or you wish to be added to the e-mail list, please contact Pat Eldred. The Old Norse Reading Group has not yet determined the readings for Fall Semester 2007.
